COUPLES THERAPY

Couples therapy is different to one-to-one work as it’s looking at a dynamic between two people and the different needs that might exist within a relationship. Sessions provide a space to have different conversations, to feel understood and to reach different outcomes with the support of a professional.

COMMON QUESTIONS

  • Sessions start with a check-in where each person has some time to speak and share how they’re doing. Then we agree on a topic that would be useful to explore or carry on a theme from a previous session. Towards the end of the session, there is an opportunity to reflect on what each person is leaving with and explore what homework might be useful for that week.

  • Black couples and couples of Colour, including mixed race and interracial couple. Couples of all gender identities and sexual orientations are welcome.

  • Communication, boundaries, co-dependency, trauma, infidelity, polyamory and non-monogamy, sex and sexuality, abortion, pregnancy and baby loss, emotional needs not being, mental health and physical health issues, ending a relationship/uncoupling etc.

  • Psychotherapy and counselling, sex and relationship therapy, Somatic Experiencing (trauma therapy), EMDR (trauma therapy), African-centred therapy and embodiment.

  • Yes, couples work is distinct and complementary to individual work. That said, you might want to space out your appointments, so that you have enough space to process both sets of therapy.

  • The first session is an assessment, where you will be asked some questions about your goals, your family and relationship history and your mental health to create a wider context for the work. If there is time, work can begin on whatever topic you would like to start with.

  • Generally, therapy is a weekly process, but it depends on what you would like therapy to help you with. There can be times when less regular sessions could work, please get in touch to discuss this further.

  • Monday-Thursday during afternoons and evenings. Evening appointments are usually fully booked, therefore if you can be flexible with your times, it’s likely you will be seen earlier. If no spaces are available, you will be advised what the wait times are.

  • We occasionally run in-person workshops, but all our therapeutic work is online.

  • A suggestion would be to have at least six weekly sessions and then go from there. If the topic(s) that are being brought to therapy are deep-rooted and you’re finding making the changes difficult then you might need to spend more time in therapy in order to fully resolve them.
